Grammar notes
When an adjective comes right before a noun and is preceded by a der-word (der/die/das, dieser, jeder, welcher, mancher, solcher) — something that already shows the noun's gender and case — the adjective only needs a light "weak" ending: either -e or -en.
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | der große -e Mann | die kluge -e Frau | das kleine -e Kind | die großen -en Kinder |
| Accusative | den großen -en Mann | die kluge -e Frau | das kleine -e Kind | die großen -en Kinder |
| Dative | dem großen -en Mann | der klugen -en Frau | dem kleinen -en Kind | den großen -en Kindern |
Quick test: almost everything is -en — the only cells that get the lighter -e are the nominative (all three genders) and the feminine/neuter accusative. Once you've memorized those five "-e" boxes, everything else in this table is -en.
