Grammar notes
All of these connectors link a time clause to a main clause, and all of them are subordinating — the conjugated verb goes to the end of their clause.
| Word | Used for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| während | Two things happening at the same time ("while"), or a contrast ("whereas") | Während ich koche, hört sie Musik. |
| bevor | One thing happening before another ("before") | Bevor ich schlafen gehe, putze ich mir die Zähne. |
| nachdem | One thing happening after another ("after") — needs an earlier tense in its own clause | Nachdem ich gegessen habe, gehe ich spazieren. |
| sobald | The moment something happens ("as soon as") | Sobald der Regen aufhört, gehen wir raus. |
| solange | For the whole duration something is true ("as long as") | Solange du hier wohnst, musst du die Regeln respektieren. |
| bis | Up until a point ("until") | Ich warte hier, bis du zurückkommst. |
| seit | An ongoing state since a point in time ("since") — main verb stays in present tense | Seit ich in Berlin wohne, spreche ich besser Deutsch. |
| seitdem | Same idea as seit, but usually pointing back to a specific past event ("ever since") | Seitdem er umgezogen ist, habe ich ihn nicht mehr gesehen. |
| als | One single, completed event in the past ("when") | Als ich acht Jahre alt war, sind wir nach Deutschland gezogen. |
nachdem is special: because it means "after," its own clause has to be in an earlier tense than the main clause — Perfekt with a Präsens main clause, or Plusquamperfekt with a Präteritum/Perfekt main clause.
als vs. wenn: use als only for a single completed event in the past. For anything repeated, ongoing, in the present, or in the future, use wenn instead (drilled in the Weil, Dass, Wenn, Ob lesson).
