Grammar notes

Pattern: これは ___ です — "This is ___." Put any noun in the blank: これは男の人です。 Japanese has no "a/the", so 男の人 is "a man" and "the man" alike.

は (wa) — topic particle. Marks what the sentence is about. これは = "as for this..." Written は, pronounced "wa".

です (desu) — polite "to be". It closes the sentence, so the noun you swap in always sits right before it.

か (ka) — question marker. Add it to the end of a sentence to make it a question: これは男の人ですか？

ではありません (dewa arimasen) — polite negation of です. = "is not".

と (to) — "and", joins nouns only: 男の人と女の人 = a man and a woman.

Answering — はい = yes, いいえ = no. You can drop これは once it is clear what you are talking about: 男の人ではありません。
